Neil made a very romantic proposal towards the end of May 1978. We became avid letter writers after he joined the RAF in April 1978 and in one of those letters he wrote

'I suppose we should get engaged at some point.....'

Although we knew we were going to get engaged it was quite a while before we made it official. Mainly because we hadn't been together very long. We were just 17 years old at that time and Neil was worried about telling his mum and dad! It wasn't until the wedding of his eldest brother that his mum brought up the subject of when we might get engaged that he made the big announcement!
